the beach house

set along the shifting edge between land and sea, the beach house occupies a striking beachfront site overlooking the river dee estuary, with uninterrupted views across to the dramatic coastline of north wales. the project is conceived as a series of interlocking, sculptural forms that respond directly to the site’s unique topography, orientation, and ever-changing light.

the composition of the building is organised around a sequence of sheltered courtyards and terraces that articulate the thresholds between interior and exterior life. each volume is carefully oriented to capture sunlight throughout the day — allowing light to animate the internal spaces, casting dramatic patterns and creating moments of calm and openness. the architectural massing breaks down the overall scale of the house, creating a collection of connected spaces that both embrace and frame the landscape beyond.

the five-bedroom dwelling has been designed to accommodate multi-generational family living, with expansive living, dining, and entertaining spaces arranged to foster social connection and flow. the spatial arrangement allows for both gathering and retreat, offering views that unfold progressively as one moves through the house — from enclosed courtyards to panoramic vistas of the estuary.

materiality plays a key role in grounding the house within its context. the choice of a red-pigmented zinc cladding references the rich tones of the surrounding red sandstone landscape, allowing the building to sit effortlessly within its coastal setting. the tactile, weathering surfaces will subtly evolve over time, reflecting the dynamic character of the site and its exposure to the elements.

currently developed to riba stage 2, the beach house embodies a sensitive response to its context — a contemporary architectural expression rooted in place, light, and materiality. we look forward to progressing the design towards planning and to realising this project’s full potential as a landmark coastal residence that harmonises with its natural environment.
