marsh house

2025
set within the expansive marshlands of the river dee, overlooking the welsh landscape, this ambitious new build represents a rare and exciting opportunity for the practice. designed for a private client, the proposal envisions a generous multi-generational family dwelling with an adjoining annex — a contemporary home that responds sensitively to its striking yet challenging setting.
the project embraces the openness and raw beauty of the surrounding landscape, taking cues from the local vernacular of rural farmsteads. a restrained material palette of stone and corrugated metal grounds the building within its context, referencing the agricultural heritage of nearby outbuildings while delivering a refined architectural expression.
informed by the ecology of the site, the design encourages the coexistence of wildlife and human habitation. the introduction of a natural swimming pool, along with a broader ecological strategy developed alongside arboricultural consultants, ensures that biodiversity is protected and enhanced.
despite the project’s scale and ambition, careful attention has been given to economy and craft. the use of repeated design details, simple fabrication methods, and a limited selection of high-quality materials allows the design to achieve both architectural integrity and cost efficiency.
currently progressing towards planning submission, the river dee residence is conceived as a bold yet grounded response to a distinctive landscape — a home that celebrates connection: between generations, between architecture and nature, and between tradition and modern rural living.
